Introducing the Heap for docs writers guide + I’m speaking at Write The Docs!

A 2-part announcement: I published a guide and am giving a talk on how docs writers can use analytics tools to measure success!

Announcement #1: Hot off the presses – the docs overview guide!

During my 4.5 years at Heap, I’ve experienced lots of success, failure, confusion, and flashes of insight teaching myself to use Heap to measure engagement with our docs. Throughout it all, I took notes on my process, hoping to one day spin them into a resource for fellow docs writers.

Well, that day has come – I’m thrilled to share the first-of-its-kind guide for docs writers at all organizations to use Heap in their docs! You can check it out in the Heap Help Center: Docs overview

This was created as a labor of love alongside my docs-minded colleagues at Heap. For questions, feedback, success stories, or memes (we love docs-related humor) feel free to reach out via any of the contact info listed in the Connect section of my homepage or via docs@heap.io.

Announcement #2: I’m speaking at Write The Docs Australia!

With that, I’m also very excited to share this news: I was accepted to speak at Write The Docs Australia in December!

Write The Docs is a pretty prestigious gig as far as technical writing conferences are concerned. I prepared my talk based on the content of the docs overview guide, and applied as an act of learning how to share my expertise in professional communities. My thought process was that I would likely not get accepted, though I’d at least get some valuable feedback to improve my talk track for future conferences.

So as you can imagine, I could hardly believe it when I got the email.

My talk “Find the frequency: metrics for better docs and happier readers” (you have no idea how many iterations I went through before landing on that title) will cover how docs teams can use analytics tools to quantify the “success” of docs, including a handy list of metrics for docs leaders to start cultivating a data-driven docs practice.

Now seeking advice: It’s my first time speaking at a conference, so I’m excited and also very nervous (especially since it’s in person). Any and all tips on speaking at conferences, including slide formatting, flow of content, and answering questions in the Q&A portion, are welcome. Feel free to comment on this post or reach out via any of the contact info listed in the Connect section of my homepage.

I’ve also never been to Melbourne (or Australia at all) so recommendations for things to do, foods to eat, and places to see are welcome! I’m super excited to visit this part of the world for the first time.

That’s it! Looking forward to meeting some of my colleagues in Melbourne soon 🇦🇺
